The Campeonato Carioca, one of the most important state tournaments in the country, has already started.
Starting on January 12, twelve teams will compete in a complex competition system, divided into three phases, to become the Rio de Janeiro champion of the season. But how can you watch the 2023 Campeonato Carioca?
To understand how the tournament broadcast will work, the main details and the first round of games, check out the information below.
Where to watch the 2023 Campeonato Carioca games
Rede Bandeirantes will take over the live broadcast of the Campeonato Carioca as the new home of the competition, with coverage on free-to-air TV throughout Brazil. In addition, the BandSports channel will be responsible for broadcasting the matches on pay TV.
The games will also be rebroadcast online by the broadcaster, free of charge on its website. However, Vasco and Botafogo's home games will be broadcast exclusively by CazéTV, available on YouTube or Twitch.
With a team of stars selected for the broadcasts, BAND will cover the main games of the competition, from the Guanabara Cup to the final in April. Sérgio Maurício and Roby Porto will be the narrators, while Ricardo Rocha, Washington “Coração Valente”, Athirson and Carlos Alberto will be the commentators. Glenda Kozlovski will be present at the stadiums, along with Getúlio Vargas.
The broadcaster's website (www.band.uol.com.br) also offers the option to watch the games. However, the portal only retransmits images from open TV.
Which teams compete in the Guanabara Cup?
The teams from Flamengo, Vasco, Botafogo, Fluminense, Audax, Bangu, Boavista, Madureira, Nova Iguaçu, Resende, Portuguesa and Volta Redonda are competing for the Guanabara Cup, which is the first phase of the Carioca Championship.
The tournament is played in a round robin format over eleven rounds, with the twelve state championship participants facing off. As the next stages of the championship approach, the number of teams decreases until the final stage, when only two competitors will compete for the title.
How the Rio de Janeiro Championship works
In 2023, the Campeonato Carioca system will remain the same as in the previous season. The first phase consists of the Guanabara Cup, in which the twelve teams face each other in 11 rounds of points. Each victory earns three points for the winning team, while a draw guarantees one point for both teams.
At the end of the last round, the top four teams in the table qualify for the semi-finals of the Campeonato Carioca. The first-place team is declared champion of the Taça Guanabara, and the last-place team is relegated to the second division.
Then, the teams that finished between 5th and 8th place compete in the semi-final of the Rio Cup, which is a secondary competition of the Campeonato Carioca.
Finally, the semi-final of the Campeonato Carioca is played in two-legged matches between the four best teams in the Taça Guanabara classification.
End
The final between the two best of the season will be in April.
